Anne Hathaway and FKA twigs at the MOTHER MARY New York Special Screening

Posted by Lorenzo Marquez

Anne Hathaway, on an apparent break from the relentless promo tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2, joined her Mother Mary co-star FKA Twigs for the New York screening. We don’t imagine they spent a lot of time coordinating their styles ahead of time, but they both landed on a kind of Gaga-esque “high fashion pop star” style that seems to hew pretty closely to the film’s themes and aesthetic.

Anne Hathaway in Lever Couture

It’s floaty, ethereal fantasy fashion that doesn’t exactly come alive on a dingy New York sidewalk. She might have wanted to save this one for an LA or London premiere. Still, she looks great. Love those champagne pink metallic pumps.

FKA twigs in Ashi Studio Couture

Lady, you had us until we got to the footwear. We’re very tired of corset tops and tricky sheer skirts, but this combination actually works and suits her well. We can understand wanting to put a couple of really kickass shoes under a dress like this, but the proportions are wildly off and the fact that they’re black when the rest of the outfit is pale just makes your eyes go straight to her massive feet.

Tom Blyth and Simone Ashley for Burberry’s High Summer 2026 Ad Campaign

Posted by Lorenzo Marquez

Burberry presents the High Summer 2026 campaign: a film and portfolio of images capturing life at the lido – celebrating Britain’s culture of open-air pools that come alive with families, friends and neighbours every summer.

British actors Simone Ashley and Tom Blyth star alongside models Alva Claire, Babacar N’Doye and Sacha Quenby and a cast of synchronised swimmers and divers.

The campaign film is directed by Francis Plummer and shot by photographer Ryan McGinley. The cameras move from loungers to diving boards, catching mid-air dives and friends stretched out in the hazy afternoon light. Before long, the best spots by the pool are claimed with a Burberry towel. Summer has begun.

Olivier Awards 2026 Red Carpet Rundown

Posted by Lorenzo Marquez

We gave Olivier Award winners Cate Blanchett and Rachel Zegler some spotlight time, but it’s time for us to round up the rest of the elegantly attired attendees and give them all a piece of our minds. Shall we do it together? Like a slightly bitchy family? Let’s.

Adjoa Andoh in Roland Mouret

Love ourselves a sharp pewter look and this dress definitely qualifies. We don’t think the silver sandals look right with it, however. We’re thinking bronze or gold.

Beverley Knight in Khaled & Marwan

Pure stunning. And very helpful to any fellow attendees who need to check their makeup but don’t want to stand in line for the ladies room.

Bryan Cranston and Robin Dearden

Acceptable and on point, but her gown looks a little chintzy and flimsy to us.

Elizabeth Hurley

No arguments here. This is downright demure for her. She looks great in white and we’re surprised to admit that we like the construction of the skirt. She just needs to yank on the neckline a little to get it centered properly.

Jane Krakowski

Can’t argue with that. It’s a little generic, but theater award ceremonies – especially British ones – don’t really call for high glamour or flash.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste in  Jenny Packham

Lovely and sharp. Hair and makeup are beautiful, earrings are well chosen.

Minnie Driver in Emilia Wickstead

It’s a pretty floral and we always feel reluctant critizing florals on the red carpet because so many stars and stylists are scared of them, but it does come off a little bedsheety, especially since the styling is practically nonexistent.

Monica Barbaro in Roberto Cavalli

Love the drapey, delicate quality of the bust and we don’t mind the black skirt, but that transition from bodice to skirt is kind of ugly and tacky looking to our eyes.

Olivia Williams in Taller Marmo

It’s too much — literally. We’re all for coverage and comfort but she can have that even if she got rid of several yards of fabric in this look.

Rosamund Pike in Burberry

This might be the most conventional thing she’s worn in years. We’re not mad at it, but it seems kind of boring for her. We like the shoes, but we think they’re too fussy for the style of dress. Not loving the wethead look at all.

Russell Tovey

Looks good, but that’s a goofy-ass way of posing to show your pocket chain.

Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton

He looks great. We can’t say we like anything at all about her dress — not the color, not the tiered tutu, not the high waist and not the fluffy shoulder treatment.

Vanessa Williams in Mary Katrantzou

Great dress but that hem length is awkward and those overly complicated shoes don’t look like they’re worth the hassle.

Style File: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Visit Australia

Posted by Lorenzo Marquez

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle kicked off a tour of Australia with two events today and we’re already pre-cringing. Look, they’re free to do whatever they want, and we’ve been supportive of these pseudo-royal visits in the past, but whenever they stage these tours of Commonwealth countries, there’s simply no way the British press, Harry’s family, and a big chunk of the British public aren’t going to find it questionable if not downright offensive. Make your Netflix deals and continue to grow Invictus as a worldwide event. That’s where it’s at for these two. These pretend royal visits just set them up for blowback and make them look like royal dilettantes; not willing to stay in the Firm, but still wanting to walk through children’s hospitals in front of cameras. It should be noted that they were invited by a private group(i.e., not the government) and that some of the events they will be attending will be ticketed. These facts tend to cast a dingy pall over the proceedings and for the life of us, we can’t understand why they insist on setting themselves up for easily avoided criticism. Skip the Commonwealth tours and focus your charity initiatives in the country you live in.

IN KAREN GEE

Having said all that, this is a pretty great look for her; sharp, chic, and well-styled, for the most part. She doesn’t always manage to pull a look together as well as this one. Of course we’d rather see her in a color, given her longstanding love of neutrals, but we’re not opposed to a chic black look if it’s done well and takes a good picture.

IN ST. AGNI AND P JOHNSON

That’s an almost-Cathy level of coordination between these two, which is rare to see, and we’re starting to realize why Cathy does it so religiously. They look good together. The fact that they’re so well coordinated actually elevates each of their looks. He’d come off pretty drab without her outfit next to him, complementing and matching it. We have no notes. Her outfit definitely looks better with the jacket on, but that’s not an issue or criticism.

stupid ethics, making life ... minimally more complicated (Ny stuff)

On Sunday, we had Ny's Online Thing. (Wake. Memorial.)

It was very good; full of singing and poetry and science facts and art and memories and sadnesses. and made me sort of/almost cry at various time periods, but because I was the Official Zoom Host I felt like I couldn't, like, take breaks, which is of course Never True. Once it finished, I ended up with a dyspeptic-and-congestion-related headache that took a bit to clear out, but it did eventually.

There were a thousand small details that I didn't quite think of, which makes sense because generally I'm not the one hosting large Zooms, or, for that matter, organizing memorials. And also, the sad.

The general inchoate "we" of the Discord have been hashing out ethical stuff about posting and/or linking to the video of the memorial. Because, it was a semi-public event, but also private, and the simultaneous chat in particular had a lot of linking up wallet names and online handles that is perfectly fine in a semi-private space, but less so in the wider world. And yet, one of the things I appreciated about Ny was that she created a life where she could, to the extent possible, be as much herself as she could, out loud, and I don't want her life's celebration muffled.

But, we didn't quite make it clear that it might be posted later, or ask people if they were OK with it being posted (see above re: small details), and in the general sense, we're fans of opt-in rather than opt-out. So we've come to a (current) compromise. I am quite positive there will be further movement later. (For all I know, someone'll make it a Project to ask everyone who was there if they're OK with it being public, or if they'd like their identities ambiguated. I'm sure not doing it, though, because I have overdue client notes to write.) But anyway, for now, we're not sending out the chat, but will send out the video. So!

If you're interested, either

a) email vicka about it, and she can send you the video. (vicka's the one with the Ny Page, which was where I originally found out about the dying-of-COVID part. Her email is findable on the wider andor pages.)

or b) PM me/comment here/email me/send me a carrier pigeon, and I can send you a link to the video, which is on Mega, which is how I got it to vicka because I decided I wasn't up to figuring out SCP. I'm not including the chat there because of the aforementioned linkages.

Or c) [personal profile] gingicat is, soon, going to post the link to the announce-list, if you're on that.

T LOunge for April 14th 2026

Noreen Restaurant – London, UK

It’s TUESDAY, darlings! We thought if we announced that unhappy fact as if it were the opposite, we could all feel excited and positive about being stuck in the worst day of the week. Alas, we’ll just have to spread out in a spacious and airy LOunge and make some noise to get through it. We’ll start off.

The Drama Wardrobe Pieces So Good, Zendaya Took Them Home With Her
Costume designer Katina Danabassis shares how to shop the film’s high-low style.

Like many people who watched The Drama, the controversial new A24 film starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as an engaged couple on the brink, I left the theater itching to talk to someone about what I saw onscreen.
Yes, yes—the plot twist was wild and raised several questions about ethical gray areas and the fallibility of forgiveness. But it would be an oversight on my part not to bring up another aspect of the film worth dissecting with equal zeal: Emma’s enviable wardrobe.

The Husbands: Everything We Know About Apple TV’s New Show
The latest bestseller turned miniseries.

Just days before the premiere of Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Apple TV is busy setting up its next comedic bestseller turned miniseries: The Husbands, based on the 2024 novel by game designer Holly Gramazio.
Developed by A24, the series takes a magical realism approach to the dating app-driven “thank u, next” dilemma: how do you know when the one you have is the one you want? And how many British hotties does it take to change a lightbulb?
With a cast full of lads lads lads, The Husbands looks like a charmer.

After the K-Beauty Boom, Japanese Skincare Is Emerging As A Major Player
After a slew of short-lived trends, “skinminimalism” is resonating

It’s difficult to speak about the state of the beauty industry without referencing the innovations coming from Asia. In just a few years, K-beauty has not only dominated our make-up bags but rewired how we think about skincare: the Western philosophy of “more is more” has been eschewed in favour of hydrating, barrier-building and “glass skin” inducing ingredients.
However, it’s not just South Korea that we should be keeping an eye on; Japanese, or J-beauty, has always been a respected player in the field, but its patient approach is paying off in 2026 with exponential interest and growth.

‘I Am Soft, But I Also Have A Temper’: Why Elle Fanning Refuses To Apologise For Being Herself
Oscar-nominated actor Elle Fanning is in her most defining chapter yet, bridging the gap from child star to Hollywood powerhouse. She talks about sisterhood, sentimentality and navigating her Saturn return.

Elle Fanning had decided that an Academy Award nomination wasn’t on the cards this year. So, on the eve of the announcements, she did what any fun-loving 27-year-old actor with nothing to prove might do: she went out dancing. With her sister Dakota, she headed to Chateau Marmont, the Hollywood hotel whose candlelit corners, late hours and free-flowing martinis have long created a hedonistic sanctuary for the A-list. And that’s where they stayed until half two in the morning. Finally, the pair returned to their parents’ house nearby and collapsed into their childhood bedrooms. A few hours later, when the sun rose, her phone started buzzing. The house erupted. ‘I was screaming. My mom was there, with my grandmother and sister. My aunt had driven around,’ she says. Generations of Fanning women together in hysterical celebration. ‘I wish we’d filmed it – we looked completely nuts.’

The Rise and Rise of the Three-Dress Bride
We asked the experts why modern brides are increasingly opting for multiple looks, and how to choose the right ones
Sofia Richie wore three custom Chanel wedding dresses, Hailey Bieber opted for a trio by Virgil Abloh, Ralph & Russo and Vera Wang—the latter paired with trainers for a turn on the dancefloor—and Jennifer Lopez looked to Ralph Lauren for three custom white gowns. Proof, if it were needed, that three is far from a crowd when it comes to wedding dresses.
And the numbers back it up, too. According to wedding specialists The Knot, wedding dresses are the most common expense among soon-to-be-wed couples, with 91% spending on a new dress compared to 76% on a cake and just 59% on a florist. Choosing what to wear is no small undertaking.

Euphoria Is Already Facing Criticism for Sydney Sweeney’s Controversial Storyline
Season three’s highly-anticipated premiere comes after a four year hiatus, with fans celebrating Euphoria’s long-awaited return. However, just hours after episode one’s release, the show is already facing criticism.
The backlash surrounds one particular upcoming season three storyline, involving Sydney Sweeney’s character Cassie Howard, which featured in a recent teaser video.

Who plays Michael Jackson in the new biopic movie?
It’s another Jackson.

Who do you cast to play a star as well-known around the world as Michael Jackson? The King of Pop was a star from the tiny age of six, performing (often as the lead singer) with his family band, the Jackson 5. He went on to release his own solo albums and sold over 500 million records worldwide, with Thriller being the best-selling album in history. He was lauded for his commitment to philanthropy, founding the Heal the World Foundation in 1992.
In later years, though, his life was mired in controversy, due to his ever-evolving appearance, mystery over his romantic relationships and lawsuits that included child sexual abuse accusations (which the singer denied and was acquitted of in 2005), before dying at only 50-years-old following an overdose.

How to wear a brooch without looking like your great aunt
The brooch is undoubtedly the accessory of the year.

The brooch is back in a big, big way. Shiny jewels and molten chrome pieces are popping up on the lapels and collars of every celebrity and fashion insider. It makes sense, considering the popularity of maximalist jewellery lately. ’80s-style costume jewellery is hot right now, if luxury brands like Yves Saint Laurent are to be believed.
The love for these sparkly adornments may also run a little bit deeper than simply what’s trending. Vintage and antique pieces hold special worth in today’s world, where the majority of what we wear and buy is mass-produced. And it doesn’t stop with vintage brooches: the simple act of customising a garment with pins taps into this desire for the unique. This might explain the recent pop culture craze for all things customisable, from bag charms to stickers.

What Is ‘Nonnamaxxing’? The Italian grandma lifestyle might be the secret to longevity
For a happier and healthier life, try these sensible habits

When I moved to Italy in 2024, one of the first things I noticed was the very particular way Italian nonnas, or grandmas, live. They walk everywhere, frequently across the city, without any assistance. Many of them are dressed to the nines, but they also don’t try to hide their age.
I was then delighted – and unsurprised – when I came across a new wellness trend making the rounds on social media. “Nonnamaxxing” is the idea that anyone can maximise their life if they just embrace the habits of Italian grandmas. It happens to be sensible guidance.

The Best Time to Go to the Amalfi Coast Is… August?
Crowds and sweltering heat have turned Amalfi into something of a summertime pariah—which, incidentally, means what was once its busiest month is now its finest.

Amalfi is my favorite place in all of Italy,” says J.J. Martin, founder of the Milan-based maximalist brand La DoubleJ, “but not in August—and not even in June or July.”
Martin isn’t alone. For years we have listened—with a hint of schadenfreude, admittedly—as friends complained of the sweltering and overcrowded madness that is high season in seaside Italy. Lately the migratory patterns seem to have shifted accordingly, so much so that there is now no better time to be on the Amalfi Coast than in August.

How to style wide-leg trousers for summer 2026
The wider the leg, the better the look.

As summer’s chicest substitute for denim, the question of how to style wide-leg trousers is firmly on everyone’s mind. Having personally lived through the era of skinny jeans so tight they earned the nickname ‘spray on’, I’m so pleased that wide-leg trousers have become a permanent fixture in our wardrobes. Whether I’m heading to the office, running errands, or heading to an evening soirée, the wide-leg fit has become my go-to for looking pulled together with minimal effort.

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s Onscreen Wedding Is Big Drama. These 8 Real-Life Unions Have Them Beat.
As the A24 film gathers buzz, Vanity Fair cordially invites you to relive some of the most notorious walks down the aisle in recent history, from Meghan and Harry’s nuptials to the Beckhams’.

All of “the drama” in A24’s new movie The Drama happens during the week before the main characters, played by Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, get married. The bride’s shocking personal revelation triggers her maid of honor and sends the groom into a tailspin, igniting wedding reception chaos that overshadows their characters’ union from the start. (Don’t even ask about the reasons for their last-minute wedding DJ.)
Following The Drama’s April 3 premiere, new details about the real-life 2022 wedding between Brooklyn Peltz Beckham and Nicola Peltz emerged this week via New York magazine. Sources said that the elderly rabbi who married the couple mistakenly called Brooklyn “David,” the first name of his soccer star father, during the ceremony’s vows. Earlier this year, David and Victoria Beckham’s son shared that his wedding to Peltz served as a crucial breaking point in his estranged relationship with his parents.

Sip Some of the World’s Most Creative Coffee Drinks in Vietnam
The Vietnamese capital’s coffee scene won it the No. 2 spot in Food & Wine’s annual Global Tastemakers Awards for top coffee cities.

While much of the world retreated into sourdough starters and Zoom happy hours, Vu Đình Tú was roasting coffee beans in his bedroom in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Before the pandemic, Tú was a lot like the rest of us, commuting day in and day out to his job in finance, picking up a quick to-go cup of coffee en route to his office. But when lockdown halted that routine, he saw it as a chance to change the trajectory of his entire life — and elevate the entire city’s coffee scene.

The Anatomy of a Perfect Reading Nook
Despite my love of reading, I am a finicky bookworm. In order for me to properly settle into a new book, the lighting must be bright enough to protect my eyes, but dim enough for relaxation. There must be no clutter or errant noise within my periphery. I must have a beverage that is either icy cold, or scalding enough I can see steam rising from the mug. The surface I’m seated upon must support my lower lumbar and be cozy—a throw blanket helps—and the mood is usually better when a candle flickers in the distance. Too much to ask? Indeed, but it’s a recipe I’ve found prolongs my focus, and that’s got to count for something.

15 Ways to Make Your Salad Sparkle With Pomegranate Seeds
Pretty pomegranate seeds add a ruby-toned pop of color and sweet tang to salads of all kinds.

Winter salads can err on the side of drab. That’s where jewellike pomegranate seeds come in. Brightly colored and bursting with tart, tannic flavor, the arils instantly wake up a dish, and they’re not that hard to remove if you know to cut a pomegranate along its sections to minimize mess. These juicy gems play well with all sorts of seasonal ingredients, from cauliflower, arugula, broccoli, and beets to hearty grains like quinoa and barley, balancing bitter and savory notes with their sweet-tart pop. Here are some of our favorite ways to put pomegranate seeds to work in salads.

Love you, Lesley Manville, but is taking photos at curtain call really that bad?
It’s uncouth, but is it really morally reprehensible?

It must be disconcerting to have Lesley Manville CBE turn her double Olivier- award-winning gaze upon you. Such was the experience of some hapless theatregoers at the curtain call for Les Liasons Dangereuses last week: getting out their phones to record Manville and her co-star Aidan Turner taking their bows, they were met with the withering glare of one of the nation’s great theatrical talents, a woman capable of conjuring the steeliness of Margaret Thatcher, the acidity of Princess Margaret, and the haughtiness of Miss Julie in the blink of a RSC-trained eye.

Drew Barrymore reveals how she would bring her Scream character back
Casey Becker was one of the very first characters to be murdered by Ghostface in the 1996 horror film.

Hold the phone! Drew Barrymore has an excellent idea for how to bring Casey Becker back to the Scream universe.
The actress, who played one of Ghostface’s very first victims in the original 1996 horror classic, shared her pitch during a conversation with fellow franchise star Laurie Metcalf on Monday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
Metcalf, whose character died in Scream 2, explained that she was surprised to return to the series in its latest installment.

16 Lemon Chicken Recipes You’ll Make Again and Again for Fresh Flavorful Meals
There are so many ways to make this classic combo sing.

It’s hard to imagine a chicken dish that wouldn’t benefit from a little lemon, and these recipes prove why. The acidic citrus fruit does an admirable job of balancing the richness of thighs and drumsticks, and it beautifully jazzes up potentially bland or dry chicken breasts. Add some herbs, whether thyme, oregano, or rosemary, and you’ve got the makings of a wonderful meal.
Whole lemons can be stored on the countertop, but our experts prefer to keep their citrus in the refrigerator, which keeps them fresh longer. Also, if you see Meyer lemons at the market, give them a try in any of these recipes. They have a mild acidity, offering a less astringent note compared to a regular lemon.

8 Things That Should Never (Ever) Go Down Your Garbage Disposal
Think before you grind.

With the simple flick of a switch, your garbage disposal can make practically any post-meal clean-up a breeze. But while it’s easy to assume your disposal can handle just about anything you feed it, the truth is it’s far more delicate than many realize.
In fact, improperly using your garbage disposal can lead to stubborn clogs, dull blades, and plumbing emergencies. The good news? A little forethought goes a long way. Knowing what not to put down a garbage disposable can help preserve your appliance and your peace of mind.

This 5,600-mile Road Trip Covers 11 States and 12 of America’s Best National Parks
It also passes the highest continuous paved road in the country.

In the early 1900s, U.S. national parks were largely playgrounds for the wealthy. Visitation often numbered in the tens of thousands, with itineraries fulfilled via expensive rail tickets, stagecoach tours, and horseback rides.
When automobiles arrived on the scene, the average American had a chance to hit the open road and see the country like never before. But in this case, the “open road” was a muddy path or dusty trail, if it existed at all. And our national parks were still wild expanses barely fit for mules.

rionaleonhart: goes wrong: unparalleled actor robert grove looks handsomely at the camera. (unappreciated in my own time)

It Seems For A Moment Like This Won't Be A Goes Wrong Entry, But Don't Fall For It.

Taskmaster is back, and I enjoyed the new episode a lot; it looks like it's shaping up to be a fun series! Here, in honour of the occasion, are a couple of Goes Wrong/Taskmaster questions I've been asked on Tumblr.

[tumblr.com profile] the-red-thread-that-strangles: If you could pick a lineup of contestants from The Goes Wrong Show to participate in Taskmaster, who would you pick, how would they do, and who do you think would win?

I’d love to see Annie, Chris, Dennis, Robert and Vanessa as a Taskmaster lineup!

I don’t imagine anyone’s surprised that I’ve chosen Robert. He’d throw himself into every task with great determination, but he’d swiftly get frustrated and start complaining. He’d argue passionately against every poor score he receives, no matter how obviously warranted.

Vanessa would approach every task with an air of brisk but slightly nervous competence and fall apart immediately.

Dennis would misunderstand more or less every task and do something completely different. His general air is ‘wandered onto the set by accident, confused and scared, doesn’t entirely know what Taskmaster is and seems to believe that something terrible will happen if he doesn’t complete these tasks’. Greg and Alex are increasingly baffled by him. Over the course of the series, Greg’s responses to Dennis’s task attempts go from making fun of him to 'you okay, mate?’

Annie would be having an incredible time; she’d have a blast with the tasks and would cheer the others on enthusiastically in the studio. She’d probably win the series.

Chris would consider the affair undignified and would sigh deeply after reading every task. He’d start out putting in a half-hearted effort, then get increasingly angry as his efforts fail and end up throwing his entire being into getting the task done.

The teams are Annie/Vanessa/Dennis, who muddle disastrously through tasks together but occasionally manage to do something surprisingly well, and Chris/Robert, who never get anything done because they’re so busy arguing about the correct approach.

Trevor, despite not being a contestant, is inexplicably there, running around in the background of tasks and putting out fires.

Anonymous: ok but who would win in a fight between robert grove and greg davies?

I think both Greg and Robert would shrink from a serious physical fight! If you forced them to battle, however, Robert is strong as hell and it’s hot; he unintentionally knocks Chris flat with a backhand in The Lodge, and he’s able to pick Annie and Dennis up with apparently very little effort. (This five-second clip in particular, where he grabs Dennis and zooms offstage, left me thinking a lot about Robert's capacity to throw people around.)

So my answer is that they’ll both try to run away from the fight. If a battle did take place, Robert would theoretically win. However, because he is a member of the Cornley Drama Society, he’s going to trip over and knock himself out in the first five seconds of the fight, and Greg will be left to claim slightly confused victory.

That or they’d make out, obviously.

Climate Change

Hurricanes are slowing down - and dumping far more rain than before

If you’ve ever watched a hurricane stall on a weather map and became worried, you’re picking up on something scientists are increasingly concerned about.

A new study suggests that rapid ocean warming isn’t just making tropical cyclones dump more rain.

It may also be slowing some of them down while they’re still in their tropical phase, which is basically the worst combo if you’re on the coast or anywhere downstream.

enjoin

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 14, 2026 is:

enjoin • \in-JOIN\  • verb

Enjoining is about requiring or prohibiting. To enjoin a person is to direct or order them to do something. To enjoin an act or practice is to prohibit it; in legal contexts, that prohibition is by way of a judicial order.

// Our guide enjoined us to take great care as we began our journey.

// The court has enjoined the ban.

// We were enjoined from speaking on the tour.

See the entry >

Examples:

“Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit Thursday ... to put a landlord accused of providing unsuitable living conditions to his renters out of business. ... The lawsuit seeks restitution for impacted tenants and to ‘enjoin the defendants from doing business in the District.’” — Gary Fields, The Associated Press, 13 Feb. 2026

Did you know?

Enjoin has the Latin verb jungere, meaning “to join,” at its root, but the kind of joining expressed by enjoin is quite particular: it is about linking someone to an action or activity by either requiring or prohibiting it. When it’s the former at hand—that is, when enjoin is used to mean “to direct or order someone to do something”—the preposition to is typically employed, as in “they enjoined us to secrecy.” When prohibition is involved, from is common, as in “attendees were enjoined from photographing the event.” In legal contexts, enjoining involves prohibition by judicial order, through means of an injunction, as in “the judge enjoined the sale of the property.”

Tuesday: The Letter "C"

Hi, everyone! I'm templefugate, and I'll be your host again this week. Just like last week, this week we will be focusing on alphabetical prompts!

As a reminder, we are using a new posting schedule. Sundays are for Lonely Prompts and sharing the fills that you completed during the week, Tuesdays and Thursdays are for new themes and prompts, and Saturdays will remain a Free for All.

Today's theme is the letter "c". All prompts should center around a word or words starting with "c".

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and the fandom's full name
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above-mentioned spoiler cut.

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ The X-Files, Dana Scully & Fox Mulder, cursed objects
+ DC, any Teen Titan, carelessness
+ Any, any F/F, caress

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? You can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.

While the use of LJ's advanced search options is available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site, please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site but you are still more than welcome to participate.

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so…and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

I agree with this post that the human body was not designed to know what the worst person in the world is doing every fifteen minutes, but it was not possible for me to avoid hearing that the man in the White House shared AI slop of himself as Jesus healing the sick for Pascha. It was much nicer to discover that Aimee Mann circa 'Til Tuesday belonged so clearly to the elusive Bowie–Swinton species. She could have starred in Liquid Sky (1982).

Habit Tracking: Week 15 (April 05 - April 11)

This week, a sticker of the lunar lander from my friends the Atomic Pixies. Not quite the same thing, but seemed appropriate for the week of the Artemis II mission. :)

This was a decent week. It was nearly a "bingo" week (a week where I did every tracked habit at least once.) It barely misses out, because my non-fiction writing didn't hit the 500 word threshold, but it was over 400 words, so I'm sort of counting it. I also got almost everything I'd hoped to done. It was really cool getting to follow footage and coverage of the Artemis II mission throughout the week. I worked a bunch on my reading page for my tracker (since I'm about to start a new tracking notebook, I decided to redo this year's in the new book), and it's felt nice to do an artsy thing. I did a decent amount of reading, and have been lucky with enjoying all of it. I didn't do as much writing, either on reviews or on my WIP, as I'd hoped, but I did actually work on both. Work was fine. I have continued with my workday walks. Minorly dreading going to the doctor next week.

Goals for the week:

  • I read These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart
  • I started reading The Two Towers
  • We paid rent
  • I paid toward my hospital bill
  • I cleaned up my floor (mostly realigning and vacuuming the tower of dog beds)
  • I did work on my WIP outline
  • I did set up my reading page in the new notebook
  • We did go get fruit flies, but will have to get more since they were on the end of their cycle :/
  • I worked on my reviews
  • I put my laundry away
  • I did not vote :( It was a little special election, and I filled out my ballot, but thought I had an extra day to drop my ballot off.

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 5/7
  • Household Maintenance - 3/7
  • Physical Activity - 6/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 1/7 - over 500 words
  • Non-fiction Writing - 0/7, but with one day of under 500 words
  • Meta Work - 3/7
  • Personal Writing - 3/7
  • Other Creative Things - 5/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - I read These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart, started The Two Towers, and read some of Game Changer, as well as the short story "Constellations"; Alex and I read some of The Luminous Dead.
  • Attention to Media - 7/7 - Sunday was very slow at work, so I had book reviews in the background, then later had paranormal videos and news coverage in the background; Monday we watched coverage of Artemis II and the eclipse they got to see; Tuesday we watched news; Wednesday and Thursday had exploration and game videos on; Friday we watched the splash down of the Artemis II crew, and then later some game videos; Saturday watched paranormal then game videos.
  • Video Games - 1/7 - I played some more Hades and got one more successful run.
  • Social Interaction - 7/7

Total words written: 1047 on reviews and on my WIP

The Black Maybe: Liminal Tales by Attila Veres

A collection of short stories translated from Hungarian. I picked this up from the library because I'd seen references to the author writing cosmic horror, which is apparently one way to get me to read a short fiction collection I otherwise know nothing about.

Veres has a direct, unsentimental style that reminds me a bit of Lisa Tuttle, although with less interest in women. Like Tuttle, one gets the impression he doesn't like people all that much. I enjoyed the eastern European perspective, adding extra flavor to ideas I've seen American or British versions of before. Veres also is really good at spooling out the key information, so that apparently unremarkable scenarios get weirder and weirder as we learn more detail.

And indeed, there is some straight up Lovecraftiana in here as well as two different body horror twists on the idyllic rural past, all of which are squarely my kind of thing.

Favorites:
Well, both the Lovecraft ones. "Multiplied by Zero" is a travel report from a man who's gone on a guided tour of a Lovecraftian horrorscape. I enjoyed the contrast between subject matter and tone all the way along, and then it really stuck the landing.

Meanwhile, "Walks Among Us" is an inside view of a Lovecraftian cult, aka exactly my jam, seen from the perspectives of two people raised in the faith and struggling with it and one who's married in. I'm amazed by how deftly Veres weaves all the backstories together with the present day timeline. This is extremely nonlinear and yet I never had any trouble following the action. One could argue the discussion of the cult as a religious minority is not great, given that this minority really is into murder and slavery and all that, but I enjoyed the Watsonian view of the world too much to quibble about the Doylist implications.

The two farming horror ones are honestly quite similar in subject matter, if not theme, to the point of feeling a little repetitive. "Return to the Midnight Soil" has the more interesting and imaginative body horror, but I think the title story "The Black Maybe," about a family from the city doing farming tourism, wins by a hair because it's more horrific, rather than tragic like the first one, and because I cared a lot more about the daughter in it than about either of the boys in the other story.

And "The Time Remaining" is the slashy entry, a story about a man whose life keeps getting worse and the devil whose life's purpose is to convince him to lead the armiese of hell. VERY shippy.

Least favorites:
"To Bite a Dog," about a woman who discovers the psychic power of dominating other creatures by biting them and her boyfriend who can't decide how he feels about it. The most Tuttle-feeling story of the collection because of how damn bleak it is. Also I just don't like animals being upset or in pain. It's rough being a horror fan sometimes.

"Fogtown," an epistolary story composed of an unfinished manuscript about someone else's unfinished book about an incredibly popular underground band that seemingly no one ever actually heard. I love this kind of thing normally, but the nested epistolary layers (complete with editor's notes!) were hard to keep track of, and the underlying story just didn't have any meat to it. I've read this story before with less effort and at least as much reward.

Those were the first two of the collection, so I'm really glad I pushed through to the ones I enjoyed! In fact, I ended up liking the collection enough that I bought his new one rather than waiting for it to show up at the library.

planet trouble

I post a lot of queer poetry, which should really come as no surprise to anyone. I also buy a lot of poetry books, especially in and around the month of April; when we were in New York last year, I bought Stephanie Burt's 2025 anthology Super Gay Poems, which is really fantastic and highly recommended for both the brilliant essays about each poem and the poems themselves. It also gives me a lot of personal joy because it doesn't have a single poem in it that I've already posted (in 19 years!!), which is so cool and exciting—although there are a handful of poems I've read in the anthology, and several poets I've heard of (or posted other work by), I really love the part of doing this each year where I get to learn and discover new-to-me poems and poets.

Since I skipped yesterday, I am going to indulgently post two poems from the anthology which are completely unrelated, except that they both haunt me (and also both have great enjambment).
