New Who

OK, Eleven, I'm going to try and love you. I really am. We are not off to a great start, but it could have been worse. I promise to try harder next week if you will.

I watched "End of the World", cried at Ten, couldn't bring myself to watch Eleven.

I really enjoy the "ripping yarn" aspects of Dr. Who, so I really do *want* to continue to watch. But this new version may just be skewed too young for me. I don't know. Obviously people have had to make transitions to new Doctors before and have adjusted just fine. But here's the question: do you think there's ever been a Doctor before Ten that so many people were just totally head over heels crazy in love with? I don't mean just that they adored him; heck, I adored Christopher Eccleston, but I didn't consider him my TV boyfriend. But DT was different. What do you think?

Eleven did a very respectable job and in a *few* moments I thought he rose above that. I see potential there, but it's very early days yet. On the other hand, I had a real problem with the companion. I do not like women who automatically hate women characters; that always makes my blood boil. But I have to be honest and say I hated every single thing about the new companion. All other reviews seem to find her delightfully charming. I beg to differ. But again---early days.

Will shut up now. Don't know why I'm Miss Chatty Chatty Blah Blah this morning!

I'm not sure any doctor has had the TV boyfriend impact of DT - my friend Tim grew up in Manchester and says that he hated the new guy when they switched over (Six to Seven maybe) but that he got over it in about 2 weeks. I adored Eccleston too and was very bummed by his replacement, but after two or three episodes I was on board with DT. After Rose buggered off I was TOTALLY in love with DT (sorry, I know she was awesome but all that mopey love bugged me - Donna is my favorite!)

I don't like the look of that Amy, but we'll see. As I said, Donna is my favorite so big shoes (both literally and figuratively!)

I have liked all the companions before this, although it's probably good that I fell in love with Rose during the first season. After DT came along, she did get mopey and I never really believed that he would love her that much. I guess if push came to shove, I'd say that Martha Jones was my favorite but that's not really fair because Donna is just sort of in a class of awesome all by herself!

OMG, now I miss Donna! Trust me, she would wipe the floor with this new little girl.

But....we shall see.

ETA: If you do watch, there's a child actress that does a bang-up magnificent job. And Matt Smith's interactions with her are just lovely. That's one of the reasons I think he may surprise me in the future.

I know if I'd been more

engaged in the story, I might be able to overlook the freakish feeling every time I look at eleven, but I wasn't, so I can't. Once you have an idea in your head, it doesn't go away and no matter how I look at him, he's Frankenstein, you know? And it has nothing to do with being perceived as good looking, after all, many of the doctors through the years have been anything but. We've had elderly Doctors (1 & 3), & handsome doctors (5 and the movie version), wacky doctors (like #4, the wonderful wacky Tom Baker). I consider Christopher Eccleston an 'interesting' looking Doctor but hardly 'goodlooking' and David, well, David is in a class by himself. Not traditionally good-looking by any sense, but...lovable? Adorkable? Yeah, #10 was definitely adorkable. If we were going to decide if there was a Doctor who could legitimately be called handsome, it would probably be #5, Peter Davison (and okay, Paul McGann, but does he really count? Besides, his wig was terrible *g*).

Naturally any change in a show takes time for the viewer to adjust, but really, with Doctor Who, change is part of the show. We, the audience, *know* that at some point, the doctor will change so we're ready for it. I loved #9 and wasn't sure I was ready to give him up so quickly but still, it only took David 2 episodes to win me over. Well, I've seen two episodes with Matt and no, not won over. Just can't watch him. Feel terrible about it, but that's life.

I think if you've given him two chances and he just doesn't do it for you, then you've been more than fair. I don't see the Frankenstein thing myself. He is indeed odd looking, but nothing that bothers me. Like I said, I see potential there. And to be honest, the only thing I've really got against him so far is that I felt he was trying a bit too hard, and that he's not Ten! So I'm sticking with it for the season and I'll re-evaluate after that.

I just have to get over the feeling that I want to scream every time Amy opens her mouth. But I admit my first impressions are often wrong, so I'm going to keep an open mind. Other people seem to like her. *shrug*

What shows are you loving these days?

I'm still stuck on Castle, The Mentalist, The Closer, Lie to Me. :) Oh, and Fringe. I came to Fringe late, but I'm oh, so loving it. I'll come back to Leverage now that Sophie's back *g* I know too much about Jeri Ryan and she ruined the show for me - but I can't wait to come back.

I kind of like Human Target too (always have loved Mark Valley) but it already has an obvious formula: Find person to protect, bad guys show up immediately, must have violent fist/leg fight, teckie does his miracle and then bruised and battered hero gives money/jewel/whatever away because, like Patrick Jane, he's trying to make up for past sins. Ta-da! LOL!

As for my Science Fiction fix, I wish SyFy would get their freaking act together regarding their shows. They come, they disappear, they come again. It's like an STD. *eg* How can you build an audience when the shows just up and go poof for months - and months - at a time? Warehouse 13 really had me, as did Eureka and yes, Sanctuary, and yet, they allow so much time between their versions of a season, it's criminal. You totally forget the shows! I really thought they'd learned their lessons with SG1 and SGA (when they finally split the seasons by only a couple of months instead of almost a year) but alas, no. *sigh*

And as for Eleven's new companion, well, we usually have to get used to them too (although, of all the companions, I will say that Martha Jones was the only one I immediately LOVED and no, I don't consider Jack Harkness a legit companion but oh, wouldn't an entire season of just him and the Doctor have been great? Anyway, I think Amy will grow on you. :)

Okay, your turn. Shows?
