This has all happened before...

OK, is anyone out there watching Caprica? What do you think? I watched the two-hour pilot last night, and right now it could go either way. It could go downhill fast or I could become totally hooked. I guess we shall see. The pilot was a little slow, but omg SO beautiful to look at. I don't know why TPTB think we are all so fascinated by obnoxious teenage girls, and I kept wanting to yell at Zoe to get her damn hair out of her eyes and stop mumbling. I do not believe for a minute she was (is) a computer genius; I think she just needed a good spanking. And the religion angle is not really my cup of tea, but does provide some fascinating insight into the Cylons of BSG.

HOWEVER, like I said, visually striking. Interesting ideas. Some surprises. Canadian actors! Vancouver! Shiny cylons and hilarious little servant-robot-things that look like bowling pins. Trixie from Deadwood, yay! Lovely broody Esai Morales in a sexy hat! And I guess most of all it proves that my long-held crush on Eric Stoltz is still there and going strong.

OH, and they totally ripped off a line from a Star Trek TOS novel from the seventies! Don't ask me how I know that. I was equal parts annoyed at that and yet oh so happy!

So Caprica, I'm not sure we'll ever be best friends, but we might and I'm willing to go on a couple more dates with you and see how it works out...

ETA: OK, the line I mentioned was actually originally said by William James. From Wikipedia:
William James coined the famous verificationist motto: "A difference that makes no difference is no difference".
NOT from that TOS novel that had a big influence on my early slashy leanings, but hey whatever...
Sigh.

Hoo boy! Not sure I'm the person to ask about BSG, since I had a total love/hate relationship with it! But I did watch it all, so here goes:
1. I never saw the miniseries but even people I know who didn't end up liking BSG loved the miniseries. So definitely start with that. (and I'm pretty sure CKR was in it too.)
2. Sounds like you are a CKR fan? :-) Just be warned that he's not in the series a LOT, but the episodes where he does play a big part are pretty spectacular. So that's good! Just be prepared for looooong stretches with no Callum.
3. I think Caprica might be able to stand alone if you haven't seen BSG. But I would NOT recommend doing that if you think you're going to watch BSG later, because I think you're right in that it would spoil the fun of learning things along the way while watching BSG.
4. I'd recommend starting BSG and see if you like it. I'm not one of the "OMG, it was the most amazing show ever" folks. Far from it. But I did like it enough to watch the whole thing, so . I won't explain further, because that might just spoil things for you as you watch! Watch it, see if you like it, give it some time. If it turns out that you love it, then I'd say do NOT watch Caprica until after you're done with BSG.
5. If it turns out you don't love BSG, then I'd say give Caprica a chance as a stand-alone.

That's my take on it anyway!

What a great tip without spoiling anything at all! Thank you very much, I'll not start Caprica then (like you, I'm turned off a bit by the sultry gal, and I've only seen the pics; I used to love Stoltz a few decades ago though). Must get cracking on old shows, grah.

When you start watching BSG let me know what you think!
